How to Prepare for Breast Surgery: Best Tips for a Smooth Recovery

Getting breast surgery is an exciting step toward your aesthetic goals. Proper preparation is key for a smooth procedure and optimal healing. At Impressions Face + Body, Chicago, our board-certified plastic surgeons understand the importance of pre-surgery planning. Here, Dr. Eric W. Anderson, one of our top surgeons, shares his best tips for getting your body ready before breast surgery.

Tip 1: Hydration is Key

Hydration plays a vital role in preparing for surgery, especially since you’ll need to fast the day of your procedure.  Anesthesia can cause fluctuations in blood pressure, and being well-hydrated beforehand helps prevent potential complications. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to surgery to keep your body balanced and ready for the procedure.

Tip 2: Stop Vaping or Smoking

If you use nicotine products, it’s important to stop at least two weeks before surgery. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, reducing circulation and significantly impairing your body’s ability to heal. Without proper blood flow, you run the risk of incision breakdown, infection and delayed recovery. Your results and your safety depend on giving your body the best chance to heal properly.

Tip 3: Pause Your Weight Loss Medication

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have helped many achieve incredible weight loss results. But these medications work by reducing caloric intake, which can lead to nutritional deficiencies that hinder your body’s ability to heal. You’ll need to stop taking your weight loss medication two weeks before surgery and four weeks after to allow your body to get the necessary nutrients for recovery. Continuing to take GLP-1 medication post-surgery can result in delayed healing or even incision complications.

Tip 4: Use Alastin Reform + Repair

A quality skincare routine can ensure a seamless recovery process.  Dr Anderson recommends using Alastin Reform + Repair two weeks before surgery and for two months afterward to support your skin’s recovery. This medical-grade skincare product is designed to reduce swelling, support collagen production and improve post-surgical healing. Have questions about your pre-surgery plan?
