What Is an Otoplasty?

An otoplasty is a type of cosmetic ear surgery designed to transform the ears and make them appear as natural as possible. By permanently amending the ears' shape, size, or position, we introduce balance to the entire face.

Having ears that are different is nothing to be ashamed of, but we understand that many people yearn for the beauty of their whole face to be recognized. Otoplasty doesn’t just change the appearance of your ears—it will leave you with confidence, no matter your age.

Your Otoplasty Consultation

In your initial appointment, Dr. Dayan will examine your ears and review your medical history. Your voice is meaningful to us, so we’ll also discuss your expectations for surgery and how you envision your ears to look. Dr. Dayan will formulate a unique plan centered around your needs and desires.

Preparing for Your Otoplasty

Once we’ve booked a date, we’ll support you in the lead-up to your exciting day. Our team may advise you to refrain from taking certain medications, stop smoking before surgery, and arrange transport to and from our clinic. If you have any questions, we’re only a call away.

Your day of transformation. As you arrive at our clinic, our friendly staff will greet you and instantly put you at ease. Absolute comfort will emerge as we administer an anesthetic, ensuring you’re pain-free.

Dr. Dayan strives for perfection as he puts decades of experience to work while using advanced tools and thoroughly tested techniques to give you a personalized procedure. After making a small incision on the back of your ear, he will carefully and precisely craft your ears by reshaping or pinning them back, all within a couple of hours. A seamless, smooth, and simple procedure—you have nothing to worry about with Dr. Dayan.

Otoplasty Aftercare & Recovery

After your otoplasty, you can return home the same day to begin healing in your place of peace.

Otoplasty recovery is a personal journey; no two people are the same. We’ll discuss how you can look after yourself and will provide you with an aftercare plan detailing these guidelines.

  • Rest: To help your ears heal, you’ll need to take some time off everyday activities. Five to seven days away from work or school and a few weeks off physical activity
  • Wound care: Before you leave the clinic, we’ll gently wrap your head in a light dressing, which should be worn for several days to protect your ears.
  • Managing pain: You might experience discomfort, itching, bruising, and swelling. While these side effects are usually mild and resolve after a few days, we’ll help by prescribing pain medication.

Our team will organize a follow-up appointment with Dr. Dayan to check in on your recovery. Finally, the highly-awaited moment has arrived: we’ll remove the bandage, and your beauty will unfold as you gaze at your new reflection. Your satisfaction is our utmost priority, so please get in touch if you have concerns at any time during your recovery.

Am I a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?

Only a board-certified and talented plastic surgeon like Dr. Dayan, can properly establish who is and isn’t a candidate for otoplasty. Those looking to improve their ears' appearance are invited to arrange a primary consultation with one of Chicago's most trusted plastic surgeons. He will assess the ears and discuss the objectives they want to achieve through the surgery. Once a patient is determined to be suitable, he will design a personal plan to meet the patient’s unique aesthetic desires and anatomical needs. Suitable otoplasty candidates include children, teens, and adults who:

  • Have a positive self-image but are concerned with the look of their asymmetrically shaped, protruding, or overly large ears
  • Boast realistic expectations
  • Are more than 5 or 6 years old, with ears that have stopped growing
  • Understand the risks associated with surgery
What Are Some of the Most Common Ear Deformities?

While trauma can damage ears later in life, most ear deformities are caused by genetic differences in the cartilage tissue that shapes and curves the outer ear.

  • A hypertrophic conchal bowl occurs when the inner cupped part of the ear (the conchal bowl) is too deep or not set close enough to the head. This causes the ears to stick out or appear too prominent.
  • Poorly developed antihelical fold, sometimes known as lop-ear deformity, occurs when a cartilage fold is missing from the upper ear. This fold keeps the ears pinned back. Without it, they can stick out or fold forward.
Can an Otoplasty be Performed on Children?

Dr. Dayan generally performs otoplasty on children as young as five, when the ears have fully grown. However, we also perform otoplasty on even younger children, where birth trauma means their ears may benefit from earlier intervention.

We understand how growing up with ears that look different can be challenging for a child’s self-esteem and confidence. That’s why parents often decide it’s best for their little ones to undergo otoplasty at a young age. You can trust our team at Impressions to look after the smallest members of your family and provide them with an experience like no other.

What Kind of Procedure do I Require?

Only a trained medical professional can determine what kind of otoplasty you’ll require. Dr. Dayan will use his expertise to tailor the otoplasty to your ears—whether this involves pinning back the ears, reducing their size, or reshaping them.

If you have a hypertrophic conchal bowl, Dr. Dayan will carefully shape the cartilage on the back of your ear, making the placement and appearance look extraordinarily natural. Alternatively, if you’re missing a fold from the upper ear, Dr. Dayan can create one by artistically curving the upper part of your ear.

Is Non-Invasive Therapy Available?
Non-invasive alternatives to otoplasty are currently unavailable. However, if you choose to go ahead with otoplasty, our team will go above and beyond to ensure you feel safe and supported from the first moment you contact us. We’re here for you and will help you achieve stunning results.
