CoolSculpting is a non-invasive fat removal treatment that was approved by the FDA a decade ago. At Impressions Face + Body in Chicago, IL, we proudly offer this treatment because of its safety, efficacy and efficiency. Today, we reveal everything you need to know about this body sculpting treatment, including whether it can really freeze fat off.
Can Coolsculpting Really Freeze Fat Off?
Yes. CoolSculpting can really freeze fat off. As stated previously, it was FDA-approved over a decade ago for safety and efficacy. The CoolSculpting device cools the fat in the targeted area to approximately 40 degrees. It can get down to 38 degrees if there is a large amount of fat that needs to be removed.
This treatment is safe because frostbite doesn't occur until it is cooled to 31 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, there is no risk that your skin will receive any freezing-related damage. As an added layer of protection for your skin and comfort, a special gel is applied to the treatment area before the device is turned on and applied to your skin.
How Much Fat Can This Treatment Freeze Off?
Typically, you can freeze approximately 20 to 25% of the fat cells in an area you are targeting during your CoolSculpting session. Nevertheless, you must understand individual results vary. If you don't have too much subcutaneous fat in the targeted area, you may not remove as much fat as you might expect. Targeting smaller parts of the body can result in the freezing of up to 80% of the subcutaneous fat in the area.
Where Can This Treatment Remove Fat From?
The CoolSculpting device can freeze fat from just about anywhere. We will evaluate your trouble areas during your initial consultation to ensure this treatment will help you reach your goals effectively. Typically, we look for at least an inch of pinchable fat to consider an area good for treatment but we can also remove unwanted fat from smaller areas that have as little as half of an inch of pinchable fat. Here are some areas you can remove unwanted fat from:
- Abdomen
- Back
- Upper arms
- Thighs
- Neck
How Quickly Does This Treatment Freeze Off Fat?
CoolSculpting can freeze off fat in as little as 35 minutes. However, treatment sessions can take up to 75 minutes depending on how many areas you're targeting for treatment, how long those areas are and how much excess fat you need removed. We will give you a better idea of how long your treatment session will take during your initial evaluation.
How Soon Will I See the Results of My Treatment?
It can take a few months to see the final results of your treatment. However, you will start to see the initial results of treatment within just a few weeks. During your initial evaluation, we will advise you regarding how many treatment sessions you may need to achieve your desired results. If you need more than one treatment session in a particular area, we strongly recommend that you schedule follow-up sessions 60 days after each previous session. This ensures you have a good idea of how effective the previous treatment was.
How Many Sessions Will I Need to Perfect My Contours?
You will only need one treatment session to achieve your desired contours if you are already at your goal weight. If you still have a bit of weight left to lose, you may need a couple of sessions before you feel satisfied with the results. If you have quite a bit of weight left to lose until you reach your goal weight, you will probably need three treatment sessions to feel satisfied with the amount of excess fat removed.
Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?
Most adults who have a BMI under 30 are considered good candidates for this treatment. However, it isn't right for everyone with a BMI lower than 30. Besides your BMI, signs that indicate you may be a poor candidate for treatment include:
- Loose skin
- Cryoglobulinemia
- Certain types of anemia
- Cold urticaria
- Reynauld's syndrome
- Pregnancy
- Plans for future pregnancy
It's important to note that there is no risk to you or your future fetus if you get pregnant after your CoolSculpting treatment. The only reason this treatment isn't recommended to receive this treatment if you plan to get pregnant in the future is you can still gain weight after treatment. Your lymphatic system flushes out the frozen fat cells and your body can't grow new fat cells, but weight gain can still occur as the remaining fat cells expand. Weight gain is common during pregnancy and if weight gain occurs while you are pregnant after treatment, you may need a follow-up treatment session.
